Hippenseppenhof
The Hippenseppenhof is the oldest building in the museum built in 1599 and has wooden shingles pitched almost to the ground as a means of protection from the harsh climate in the area the building originated from. |
The crucifix decorates the stable which is in front of the building and the humans lived in the back as the building was built against a slope with the slope adding additional protection from the harsh climate.

Vogtsbauernhof
The Vogtsbauernhof was built in 1612 and is the only farm house in the museum that is standing in its original location. In 1964 it was opened as a museum even though it was still home to Jakob and Barbara Aberle and their daughter Maria. |
The building behind the main house is a food storage house kept away from the main house in case of fire. This storage house is a bit too close as normally they are 130 feet away. A typical detail of these houses in the 1600's was the white stone kitchen wall (behind the flowers). It was required by law by the king to have the kitchen wall made of stone to protect from fire.

A Hiking We Will Go
(but let's take the easy way up using the Allmendhubelbahn ) The Allmendhubelbahn is a funicular or cable car that takes you to a small summit called Allmendhubel just above Murren. The Allmendhubelbahn has been bringing skiers and hikers to Allmendhubel since 1912. The last part of the ride is thru a tunnel.

We do not remember days,
we remember moments. Cesare Pavese |
This walk with nature took us down a two mile path from Trummelbach falls to Lautenbrunnen and was beautiful in every direction with a view of Staubbach Falls
|
Murren is uphill, so we opted to forego the 90 minute 2272 foot forest climb, and used the tram to Grutschalp. Cows are an important part of Alpine life in Switzerland, so we were not surprised when we were greeted by this colorful friend when we exited from the tram in Grutschalp. We named her Floral.
