Next Stop Munich
We arrived in Munich around 5:00 and started with a Munich Orientation Walking Tour and then a group dinner.
Our orientation walking tour took us past a few highlights including Eataly (Italian restaurant and store) where we could orient ourselves in the direction of the City Museum (Munich Stadtmuseum) and Asamkirche. We then reversed directions and walked through the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz with our final destination Bratwurst Gloeckl am Dom. Viktualienmarkt Highlights

Munich New Town Hall and Glockenspiel
The Glockenspiel chimes three times daily and recounts two scenes from medieval history and concludes with the golden bird chirping.
|
The top half recounts the story of Duke Wilhelm and Renata of Lorraine eighteen day wedding celebration concluding with a joust between Bavaria (in white and blue) and Lothringen (in red and white). The Bavarian knight wins every time.
The bottom half recounts the legend of the barrel makers that danced through the streets to prove that it was safe to go outside as the invisible dragon that flew through the air spreading the plague was finally gone. |

The Hofbrauhaus- rich in history and tradition
The Hofbrauhaus Dark History
When you enter the beer hall, you’d never suspect its dark past, yet tourists happily sip their beers under ceiling swastikas that have been carefully painted and disguised as Bavarian flags. In February 1920, Hitler and the National Socialists held their very first meeting at Hofbrauhaus in Munich. During this gathering, Hitler presented the Nazi Party ‘Twenty Five Point Program’ (a political manifesto outlining the party’s philosophy and mission) in the Festival Room. |
The Hofbrauhaus - Bavarian tavern culture and “Gemütlichkeit” at its finest.

Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte), which contain a tuft of goat hair. In Germany, goat hair is highly valued and prized, so hairier the hat the wealthy the wearer

A German waiter set the record by carrying 27 one liter glasses of beer. That is almost 70 pounds.
Munich Residenz - our choice for the afternoon free time.
Much of the Residenz was destroyed in World War II with gradual reconstruction occurring since 1945.
The Shell Grotto
The "shell grotto" is an inspirational story of reconstruction as the palace and the grotto were destroyed by WWII bombs. Using Nazi photographs, the small-town people collected fresh water shells to rebuild the grotto as there was no money to contribute to the rebuild. |
The Antiquarium
The Antiquarium is one of the most notable rooms in the Munich Residenz with its arched ceiling covered in artwork and vast collection of antique sculptures compliments of Duke Albrecht V. Every inch of the room has a detail to take in and appreciate! |

Just one more church - Asam Church (fascinating history)
Asam Church was built by brothers Egid and Cosmas Asam as their private church hoping to secure their salvation. The interior is divided into three sections with the lower portion with dark benches to symbolize the suffering of the world. The second section is white and blue, and reserved for the emperor. The upper most section has a hidden illuminated ceiling painting and is dedicated to God and eternity.
